Another name for cloth pegs is cloth pins. David M. Smith, a resident of Springfield, Vermont, devised the modern clothespin in 1853. When the top of the peg is pinched, a lever action opens the two prongs, and when the pinch is released, the spring closes the prongs, providing the gripping action. Smith's original 1875 blueprint was refined by Solon E. Moore the following year, 1887. He integrated a "coiled fulcrum" made from a single wire to eliminate the requirement for a supplementary part and save manufacturing expenses.
