What is the internal term for the main switch?

The term given to the master switch in your home which disconnects or connects all of the house's individual circuits is the "main" or "mains" switch. In a circuit breaker box, the largest and first switch is typically the main (anywhere from 60 to 100 amps), and beneath it or to the edge is a row of smaller breakers, possibly 10 or 15 or 20 amps apiece, that go to each area of the house, such as the kitchen, the bathroom, the living room lights, or the living room sockets. The main switch controls anywhere from 60 to 100 amps of electricity.

Is the main switch a breaker?

The initial electric switch in your house that has complete control over all of the circuits is referred to as the Main Switch. This switch is controlled by the KWH Meter provided by the public utility. If this Main Switch is also a Circuit Breaker in a Panel Board, in which case it is referred to as the Main Breaker, then this Main Breaker is responsible for controlling all of the branch circuit breakers. It's possible to utilize the Main Switch as a Fused Detached Switch as well. This large circuit breaker is referred to as the main breaker, and it plays an important part in the electrical system.

The main breaker is responsible for providing the means to disconnect power to the entire circuit breaker panel, and as a result, it is responsible for turning off the power supply to the entire home. The main circuit breaker is basically the same as any other breaker; the only difference is that it is intended to manage the high amperage load that is carried by the main feeder cables that provide electrical power to the home. Because of this, the amperage rating on this breaker will be much higher than that of any other breaker in the box.

What is the location of the main switch?

Your electrical service panel box houses the primary circuit breaker for your home. If you are unsure where it is situated in your home, you should seek the panel box that houses the electrical service in either the basement or the garage. Sometimes they are located close to your laundry room or the water heater in your home.
