An ESD mat also called an antistatic mat is a covering that shields an individual or a piece of equipment from static electricity discharge. These mats come in a variety of sizes and are typically placed on the floor or a workstation surface.

ESD mats can be manufactured to fit:

A common workbench or desk
The floor space in work area
Rooms or large open sections
Entire manufacturing floors using specialized ESD floor coverings or tiles
As with other forms of static safety equipment, ESD mats serve a twofold function: they dissipate the static electricity of individuals or objects, as well as preventing the buildup of static electricity in the work environment.
