While it can be the sole source of potassium, K-52 is more often used in combination with other potassium-base products such as K-17,T SHALE CHEK,E XP-20T and KOH. A 1 lb/bbl (2.85 kg/m3) addition of K-52 provides approximately 1,135 mg/l potassium. Normal treatments range from 1 to 4 lb/bbl (2.85 to 11.4 kg/m3). K-52 is completely soluble in fresh water, seawater and salt water. It can be used in dispersed or nondispersed systems and provides potassium at any pH. K-52 is especially useful when the desired potassium level is higher than can be obtained practically with conventional potassium products. For example, in chlorides-restricted situations, K-52 is the best product for increasing the potassium level when using non-dispersed systems where high concentrations of potassium are needed for shale inhibition. K-52 can supply any potassium level needed, whereas treatments of KOH and other potassium products can only be used based on pH and mud property requirements. K-52 should be added to the system through the chemical barrel in the same manner that potassium hydroxide or caustic soda is added. K-52 is occasionally packaged in 100-lb (45.4-kg) drums, making it convenient to use the drum as a chemical barrel.
