Technical Grade Urea For Industrial Use

Urea is the primary nitrogen-containing chemical found in the urine of mammals, and it plays a crucial part in the metabolic process that animals use to break down substances that contain nitrogen. It has no discernible color or odor, is readily soluble in water, and is almost completely non-toxic (the LD50 for rats is 15 grams per kilogram). When it is dissolved in water, it does not have an acidic or alkaline reaction. The body makes use of it in a variety of functions, the most notable of which is the excretion of nitrogen. The urea cycle is the process by which the liver produces it by fusing together two molecules of ammonia (NH3) and one molecule of carbon dioxide (CO2). The chemical industry places a significant emphasis on the raw material known as urea due to its widespread use as a source of nitrogen (N) in fertilizers.

Technical Grade Urea: Overview

The agricultural industry makes extensive use of urea fertilizers. They are regarded as a financially viable supply of nitrogen. Urea has the molecular formula CO(NH2)2, and in nature, urea is found in the urine of animals. Urea is a nitrogenous compound. The production of urea fertilizers for commercial use involves the reaction of ammonia and carbon dioxide. Urea may be purchased in its solid state in the form of either prills or granules. Granules are more compact than prills, although having a somewhat bigger size. Both prilled and granular forms of urea fertilizer have a nitrogen content of 46%. When employing the prilled form, you may often expect to see increased rates of nitrogen leaching and volatilization. As a result, granular forms of urea fertilizer are about 15–20 percent more effective than prilled forms.

Fertilizers made from urea are very soluble, with a solubility of 1079 g/L at 20 degrees Celsius. As a result, in addition to their usage in soil applications, urea fertilizers may also be put on plants via a process known as fertigation or by applying directly to the leaves. However, urea fertilizers should not be utilized in soilless culture since urea would quickly drain out of the container if employed in this method of plant cultivation. The urea fertilizer that is solid has an NPK grade of 46-0-0. Urea ammonium nitrate is yet another kind of fertilizer that has a significant amount of urea in its composition (UAN). UAN is a kind of liquid fertilizer that typically ranges in nitrogen content from 28 to 32%. Urea accounts for half of the nitrogen, while ammonium nitrogen and nitrate nitrogen each make up the other quarter.

Technical Grade Urea vs Fertilizer Grade Urea

There is a distinction between fertilizer-grade urea and feed-grade urea, despite the fact that both contain 46% nitrogen. For the most part, urea used for animal feed has a higher biuret concentration (1.2%) than urea used for gardening (0.8%). The feed grade of urea has a moisture content that is much lower (0.5%) than the fertilizer grades (1.2%). Fertilizer-grade urea may come from either natural or synthetic sources, while feed-grade urea is created from the reaction of natural gas with nitrogen that is present in the air. Urea of the feed grade is a solid white prill that has an even round form, while urea of the fertilizer grade is a white crystalline powder that dissolves easily in water. Because fertilizer-grade hay is more susceptible to absorbing moisture from the air than feed-grade hay, it must be stored in a container that is impermeable to moisture. The pH of feed-grade urea, which ranges from 7.6-7.8, is lower than that of fertilizer grade (8.0). Additives for animal feed may be formulated using feed-grade materials.

In cow diets, feed-grade urea has the potential to be an efficient source of protein. Because of the high cost of feed grains and of certain grains that are rich in protein, the use of urea as a source of protein in various cattle diets may prove to be quite cost-effective. However, in order to get the most out of its use, there are a few things that need to be taken into consideration. Urea is a nitrogen molecule that is not found in proteins. That is to say, the nitrogen component of urea is used by the microorganisms in the rumen as the primary building block in the process of protein synthesis. The majority of urea is composed of around 45% nitrogen, whereas protein is composed of 16% nitrogen. It is important to keep in mind that urea does not include any other beneficial feed components like energy, minerals, or vitamins; as a result, when urea is converted to protein, this fact remains unchanged. Urea is converted to protein in cattle and other ruminants like sheep and goats, which also results in the generation of ammonia and carbon dioxide. There are two different routes that the ammonia that is produced from urea might go inside the body. The first place it may be found is in the process of the formation of microbial protein, and the second place is in the liver, where it can be detoxified before being eliminated via the urine.

Production of Technical Grade Urea

The formation of a hot melt is the first step in the production of urea, which results from the interaction of ammonia and carbon dioxide. This hot melt transforms into an aqueous solution of urea when it is combined with water, and it may also be used as a raw material for the production of urea granules or prills. Nitrogen from urea is indigestible by plants. Urea contains a form of nitrogen that is inaccessible to plants; this form of nitrogen must be transformed into ammonium (NH4+) and nitrate (NO3) before the plant can absorb it. Following its application, the urea fertilizer undergoes a series of chemical reactions in the soil, including those with water and the enzyme urease, which is found in significant quantities in soils. As a result of these reactions, urea is hydrolyzed to produce ammonium carbonate.

After that, the variables, such as pH, temperature, and the amount of moisture in the soil, determine whether ammonium carbonate is transformed into ammonium or into ammonia gas (NH3). If the circumstances are such that ammonia is more likely to be formed than ammonium, then considerable losses of nitrogen might take place. Ammonia gas can rapidly volatilize from the soil. Nitrogen is lost at a higher rate when the soil's pH and temperature are both high. When the pH of the soil is high, there is a greater conversion of ammonium to ammonia gas, which speeds up the pace of volatilization. Because elevated temperatures in the soil stimulate a greater degree of urease activity, the pace at which urea is hydrolyzed is accelerated. Urease is denatured and rendered inactive when heated to 70 degrees Celsius.

The reaction that occurs during hydrolysis goes as follows:

1. (NH2)2CO + 2H2O –> (NH4)2CO3

2. (NH4)2CO3 + H2O –> 2NH3 + 2H2O + CO2

3. NH3 + H2 –> NH4+ +OH– (ammonification)

4. 2NH4+ + 4O2 –> 2NO3– +4H++2H2O (nitrification)

Because hydrogen ions are removed from the soil in response to the addition of urea fertilizers, the pH of the soil first rises in the immediate vicinity of the fertilizer application site. This behavior is deduced from the equation. The conversion of ammonium to nitrate, on the other hand, is a process that is carried out by soil bacteria and results in a net impact that is somewhat more acidic.

FAQs Related to Technical Grade Urea

The price of technical-grade urea averages around 35 rupees per kilogram.

The term "Technical Grade" (sometimes known as "Industrial Grade") refers to a product that is often used for commercial or industrial applications. In terms of both its purity and its quality, it is the most basic grade of chemical there is. Chemicals of a technical grade are designed for use in non-essential procedures, such as cleaning laboratory glassware or functioning as raw materials in manufacture.

Fertilizers containing urea should be used with caution. It is possible that nitrogen will be lost owing to volatilization if the fertilizer is not administered properly, and in rare instances, urea may cause harm to the seeds that are trying to germinate. Soon after the application of the urea fertilizer, work it into the ground using watering or natural precipitation if possible. It is best to avoid applying urea fertilizers to the soil surface since doing so without first integrating the fertilizers into the soil leads to increased nitrogen loss. When the pH of the soil is high, losses are larger. When the temperature is neither too low nor too hot, urea fertilizers should be put into the soil. The temperature of the soil should be between 15 and 20 degrees Celsius (70 degrees Fahrenheit).

It is possible to lessen the amount of ammonia produced and lost to evaporation by using urea fertilizers that include urease inhibitors. This provides an extra week or two for the incorporation of the urea fertilizer into the soil, whether it be by rainfall, irrigation, or some other method. The production of urea fertilizers results in the formation of the chemical compound known as biuret, which has the formula [H2NC(O)]2NH. Biuret is a component of urea fertilizers and contains the element nitrogen. Biuret might be hazardous to plants if it is applied in high enough amounts. The majority of urea fertilizers include between 1.0 and 1.3% biuret, a level that is regarded to be risk-free for usage. However, some plant species are more delicate than others. Low-biuret fertilizers, which contain roughly 0.25 percent biuret, should be used for foliar treatments on crops that are particularly sensitive. If the biuret fertilizer is applied too closely to the seeds that are trying to germinate, this might potentially harm the seedlings.

Some different types of technical grade urea are:

  • 1. Oleum.

  • 2. Anhydrous Ammonia.

  • 3. Argon Gas.
