What Is Pig Feed
We are aware that it is essential for our health and well-being to consume food that is both nutrient-dense and whole. This entails consuming fresh fruits and vegetables, cereals that are whole, healthy oils, and for many of us, lean cuts of meat. What about the diet of the animals that become our food? Does the food that animals eat make a difference? They most certainly do! For illustration's sake, let's take a look at the diet of pigs. You probably learned while you were growing up that pigs consume slop. That is simply not the case. The equivalent of our junk food would be slop for a pig. If junk food was the only component of your diet, you would not be in very good condition at all. The situation is the same with pigs. You can't give a pig everything and everything to eat. In point of fact, pigs should never consume certain items like celery or uncooked sweet potatoes since they might suffer serious health consequences from doing so. Because pigs need important nutrients in varying quantities at various periods of their lives, their meals are meticulously planned out and modified as they go through their lives. Piglets, like many other young animals, begin their lives sucking on their mother’s milk, but they are able to transition to consuming solid food as soon as a week or even less after they are born. Pig feed is the name given to the food that these animals consume.
Different Types of Pig Feed
The following is a list of the feed items that will be used in the formulation of the ration for pigs;
-
1. Creep feed: The first meal that the tiny piglets will consume is called creep feed, and it is essential to dry food. This complete feed is the perfect way to get young, healthy piglets off to a good start since it contains a variety of essential nutrients, including a supply of protein, vitamins, amino acids, and rich feed components. A suitable homemade combination for creep feed may be created using broken rice, milled maize grains, and fine rice bran. The amount should be around 20 grams per piglet each day. It is essential that there be always access to clean drinking water.
-
2. Rice Bran: With a protein content of 11% and the ability to function as a primary component in a variety of meals, this is an excellent choice for feeding pigs. Rice bran may be combined with other feeds in proportions ranging from 30 to 45 per cent. However, it can only be stored for a maximum of one month due to the risk of mould growth beyond that point.
-
3. Maize: The grain is the primary component of the feed that is being used. It is an excellent supply of usable energy. The energy that can be metabolised per kilogram is 3,400 kcal. About ten per cent of it is made up of protein, and the yellow maize kind has carotene in it. Prior to use in formulation, maize has to be adequately dried. This is an excellent feed for animals since it has a carbohydrate content of up to 65% and a protein content of up to 9%. It was possible to combine and prepare it alongside other feeds, but its proportion in the mix ratio must not exceed 40 per cent.
-
3. Offal of maize: It is a supplementary source of energy and has a caloric content of around 2500 Kcal ME per kilogram. In this product, there is a larger concentration of fibre than there is in maize.
-
4. Wheat offal: The milling of wheat results in the production of this by-product, which may be used as a source of energy and also provides a supplementary supply of energy. The energy content is low in comparison to that of maize, and the amount of metabolizable energy per kilogram is around 1800 kcal.
-
5. Cassava: Cassava is a valuable source of energy, and its processing results in the production of by-products such as sievate, cassava peel, cassava flour, and cassava chaff. The presence of the anti-nutritional component hydrocyanic acid is one of the most significant drawbacks associated with the use of cassava (HCN). Before being combined with another feed component, cassava must first be dried to the appropriate level.
-
6. Sweet potato: Sweet potato is a food that is high in energy content. Pigs may be immediately fed sweet potatoes that have been boiled. When it came time to create a diet for pigs, dried sweet potato was traditionally utilised in lieu of corn to a significant degree.
-
7. Broken Rice: The pigs may easily consume this without any problems. It is possible to blend it with other meals up to a maximum of 15% to 20%. The protein content of broken rice is 8%.
-
8. Fish Meal: In addition to being a strong source of animal protein, it is also rich in a variety of amino acids, both essential and non-essential. The fish meal may be imported for use in pig feeding, or it can be sourced locally. The crude protein concentration is anywhere between 60 and 72% of the total.
-
9. Bone Meal: Phosphorus and calcium are two elements that are essential to the maintenance of the skeleton and healthy bones. Bone meal is a wonderful source of both of these minerals. Bone has a calcium content of around 37% and a phosphorus level of approximately 17%.
-
10. Oyster shell: Calcium may be found in high concentrations in oyster shells. When compared to the cost of bone meal, oyster shells are much less expensive. The percentage of calcium is 35%, and there is no phosphorus present.
-
11. The Root Crops: These may be combined with other feeds in a ratio of up to roughly 20 per cent, although the maximum allowed is 30 per cent. Before the crop can be used, it must first be peeled and cleaned, and then it must be sliced, dried, and crushed. Due to the presence of harmful chemicals, it must not be given to pigs in the form of raw cassava with the skin attached. The cassava that had been sliced and dried would have a longer shelf life.
-
12. Make your pig feed: A specialised blend of food should be given to your pigs, who are in the process of being weaned off of their mother's milk until they are around 10 to 12 weeks old. The next step is to construct a feed mixture that includes and 6 per cent soybean grits, 6 per cent protein and calcium, 6 per cent soybean meal, 12 per cent skim milk powder, 76 per cent maize, 0.2 per cent salt.
Material & Formulations of Pig Feed
Pig feeds may be broken down into their constituent parts, which are as follows:
-
1. Rations for pigs that have been made in a commercial setting using grain, fruit, and vegetables purchased from markets.
-
2. Bread scraps, vegetables, or fruit that have been properly prepared and have not come into touch with by-products or animal products. Leftovers from restaurants, food transporters, and those who dispose of food waste items, provided that the meal was properly prepared.
-
3. If they are correctly prepared, forest products such as wild bananas, wild veggies, yam, wild cola-cassia, and forage grasses may all be consumed by humans. Residues from the distillation of alcohol. Bananas, sweet potatoes, maize, rice, Millet, and other foods may be used to produce locally sourced alcohol provided they are properly prepared.
-
4. Any product containing meat, including but not limited to salami, pizza, bacon and cheese rolls, sausage rolls, pies, and other delicatessen meats, as well as table scraps, that has not been properly cooked or screened.
-
5. Any dead mammal or bird, in whole or in part, or any portion of a dead animal (raw and uncooked). All forms of flesh, blood, offal, hide, and feathers are included in this definition. When pigs eat dead animals, they put themselves in danger of getting illnesses that may be spread to people.
-
6. Any items made from fish and bones.
-
7. The waste products that are passed by any animal or bird.
-
8. Any material that has been collected, stored, or transported in a contaminated container, including but not limited to meat trays and food takeout containers, and that has been found to have come into contact with a controlled substance.
-
