Connecting Rod

The connecting rod is an important part of any engine and an absolute necessity in high performance and heavy duty ones. Their main function is to transfer the force and also the reciprocating motion of piston to the crankshaft. A connecting rod typically has two ends, with the smaller end reciprocating with the piston and the larger end rotating along with the crank pin.
Due to the dynamic nature of their function, a special emphasis is given to manufacture the connecting rods as light as possible, while still having a rigid beam section. Manufactured generally by casting, forging and powered metal processes, the connecting rods are always under a tremendous amount of stress from the reciprocating load represented by the piston. Thus, along with being light weight, these rods should also have significant sturdiness to withstand the constant stress for optimal longevity.

All connecting rods are usually manufactured through the process of drop forging. The three main metals generally used for making connecting rods are,
Steel
Aluminum
Titanium

How to Properly Install Connecting Rods

Always connect rod bolt properly.

Check the connecting rod for any defect such as a hairline crack, scratch or nick.

Also, check for any imperfections and sharp edges on the surface of connecting rod.

Ensure optimal lubrication at both ends of the connecting rod.

Prevent the connecting rod bearing on the crank from being starved of oil.

Servicing of Deformed Connecting Rods.

Deformed and malfunctioning connecting rods can be re-sized through the following steps:

The parting surfaces of rod and cap are smoothen up to remove all high spots before resizing.

The cap is then installed on the rod and the nuts or cap screws are properly torqued.

The hole is then bored or honed to be perfectly round.

The connecting rod is then checked for any misalignment. After ensuring no misalignment, it is then fit to be reused.
