Cherry Picker

They were originally used to assist others in picking cherries, thus the term "cherry picker." They are still employed in fruit orchards to assist harvest fruit that is inaccessible or located high up in trees or in awkward places. These devices revolutionized fruit picking and made sure the greatest harvest could constantly be plucked safely — without the risk of falling. By reducing time and lowering the possibility of fruit loss due to falls, they have also improved the efficiency of the fruit-picking process.

Cherry pickers are a relatively safe mechanical device. Given the application area, more protective gear is used to make its operation safer. For example, a person who is repairing the power lines needs to be wearing necessary precautionary gear that prevents him from receiving an electric shock. Similarly, the platform on which he is raised must be completely rubber matted to ensure no conduction of electricity. Similarly, those working with fruit harvesting, need to be aware of the hazards of falling trees and branches, while also being careful to not disturb bird life. 

Cherry pickers are, in reality, mechanical hydraulic devices, that have a flat standing platform on top of it, that can be lowered or raised depending on the application. Cherry picker devices are used for fruit harvesting, power lines repair, or any other application where the height of the application is inaccessible. However, there is also a slang meaning for a cherry picker. In this term, a cherry picker is a person who reaps the maximum rewards by putting in the least effort, solely by being around the goalpost. For example, a footballer hovering around the goalpost, whose only job is to connect the long ball to the goal and goes away with all the credit. Similarly, an office colleague who does not put in any effort in team exercises gets all the due credit, because he got to present the idea to the management.
