What is a brazing torch?

A brazing torch is a metal cutting or metal welding torch, which is also called an oxy-acetylene torch. Brazing is a technique similar to that of soldering, but it differs in the aspect that it is done at a much higher temperature. Also, in the soldering process, a solder made up of 60% tin and 40% lead, which has a low melting point is used to deposit on joints to be soldered. Here, in brazing, we typically use a brass rod. The flame used is either through oxy-acetylene combustion or could be modified propane, also called Mapp Gas. The brazing technique or brazing is done in order to join combinations of copper and brass. A brazing torch is used by metal workers, and more specifically artisans dealing with the crafting of copper or brass products like jugs, kettles, etc. Brazing torches are regularly found on HVAC engineering sites to weld copper tubes of heat exchangers.

What materials are used to make brazing torches?

The brazing torches, unlike the process of soldering, need to sustain a very high temperature level. This is particularly required because filler materials need to be molten onto the joints for a copper to copper or brass to brass or brass-to-copper welding connection. The operating temperature of a brazing torch is as high as 2500 degree centigrade or Celsius. The joints produced by brazing are much stronger than the soldering or sweating technique. The brazing torches have a brazing rod, through which the flame is shot onto the brazing area. Brazing rods are typically made out of brass. When we are brazing common alloys, then the filler materials are used as either copper, nickel or even silver, whereas for specific purposes, one may also use aluminum and gold, although they are rarely used.

ow much does a brazing torch cost?

A brazing torch consists of a simple assembly of high-pressure flammable gas like acetylene or MAPP gas, connected to a brass rod. One must remember that for brazing to happen, these gases are stored at very high pressure. Therefore, due care must be exercised by the user during the brazing process. The cost of a brazing torch, inclusive of different kinds of brass rods, can start from anywhere between 5000 rupees to 6000 rupees. Although there are cheaper versions of brazing torches available, it would be advisable to invest in a good quality brazing torch for a long lifetime.
