Shelf books according to Dewey Decimal System 

Study how the Dewey Decimal System works. Because the system is well organised and based on a decimal base, it is not difficult to learn. Each class of book is essentially given a call number or numbers (numbers to the right of the decimal point) and a category number (a whole number, such as 800)[1] The call number is the string of letters and numbers that appears on the spine of a library book. The system is made up of ten classes, each of which is further subdivided into ten subcategories, each of which has ten subdivisions. 

Note that call numbers have at least two components: the class number (000 to 900) and the cutter number, which is used to group books on the same subject. The cutter number(s) are inserted after the decimal point and the class number is a whole number. 

Get a feel of how classification is broken 

To get a sense of how a classification is divided, here is a brief example of where you might look for, or put, a book on American fiction published between 1861 and 1900. (The general category for literature is "800").
Note the number after the "8". The "1" means that the book is also categorised as "American Literature, General". The division is further defined by the second number after the "8"; for example, 811 is American poetry, 812 is American drama, 813 is American fiction, 814 is American essays, and so on.
The classification is further refined by the first number after the decimal point, which you should pay attention to. So if a book has the call number "813.4", you know it is American fiction.

Small mobile shelving

Stacks can be moved to one side or the other to create an aisle when one is needed. The racks can be moved by pushing, turning a crank or using an electric motor. They are mounted on metal rails.
