Q. What is the purpose of a resectoscope?
Answer
A small, hollow tube that is inserted into the body and used to remove tissue. To better observe its subject, a resectoscope typically comes equipped with both illumination and magnification. A device that employs the use of electricity to cut, remove, or kill tissue and control hemorrhage is included as well. In men, the urethra is used to guide a resectoscope into the bladder or prostate. When used on females, it is introduced into the uterus via the vagina and cervix. It is effective in treating enlarged prostates, as well as bladder and uterine problems. The ureteral orifices where the incisions are made in the bladder neck are examined for pathology and area.
