Product Overview
Key Features
Morovir is a brand name for a medication that contains the active ingredient molnupiravir. It is an antiviral drug primarily used to treat mild to moderate COVID-19 in adults who are at a high risk of developing severe illness, including hospitalization or death.
How it Works
Molnupiravir is a prodrug, meaning it is converted into an active form inside the body. Once metabolized, it becomes N-hydroxycytidine (NHC), a ribonucleoside analog. NHC works by introducing errors into the genetic material of the SARS-CoV-2 virus as it replicates. This process, known as "lethal mutagenesis" or "viral error catastrophe," causes so many mutations in the viral RNA that the virus can no longer replicate effectively. This helps to reduce the viral load in the body and lessen the severity of the disease.
Dosage and Administration
Dosage: The typical recommended dose for adults is 800 mg (four 200 mg capsules) taken orally every 12 hours for a period of 5 days.
Administration: It is crucial to start taking Morovir as soon as possible after a COVID-19 diagnosis and within 5 days of the onset of symptoms. The capsules should be swallowed whole with water, and can be taken with or without food.
Missed Dose: If a dose is missed by less than 10 hours, it should be taken as soon as possible, and the regular schedule should be resumed. If more than 10 hours have passed, the missed dose should be skipped, and the next dose should be taken at the regularly scheduled time. Do not double the dose.
Important Safety Information
Prescription Only: Morovir is a prescription medication and should only be used under the guidance of a healthcare professional. It is not a substitute for vaccination against COVID-19.
Pregnancy and Birth Defects: Molnupiravir is not recommended for use during pregnancy as animal studies have shown it can cause harm to the unborn baby. Women of childbearing potential should use effective contraception during and for at least four days after treatment. Men of reproductive potential should also use contraception during treatment and for at least three months after the last dose.
Not for all cases: The drug is not authorized for use in patients who are hospitalized for severe COVID-19, nor is it meant for the prevention of COVID-19 (pre-exposure or post-exposure prophylaxis). It is also not authorized for use in individuals under 18 years of age due to potential effects on bone and cartilage growth.
Common Side Effects
The side effects of molnupiravir are generally mild. The most common ones reported in clinical trials include:
Diarrhea
Nausea
Dizziness
Headache
It is important to complete the entire 5-day course of treatment, even if symptoms improve, to help prevent the development of antiviral resistance.
