Cefixime + clavulanic acid is a combination of two medicines: cefixime and clavulanic acid. Cefixime is an antibiotic. It works by preventing the formation of the bacterial protective covering which is essential for the survival of bacteria. Clavulanic acid is a beta-lactamase inhibitor which reduces resistance and enhances the activity of cefixime against bacteria. Cefixime+clavulanic acid belongs to the group of medicines called 'antibiotics' used to treat various bacterial infections of the urinary tract, ear, throat, lungs, and uncomplicated gonorrhoea. Bacterial infections are caused due to the multiplication of harmful bacteria inside or on the body. Clavulanic acid is a medication that can be used in conjunction with amoxicillin to manage and treat bacterial infections, specifically bacteria that are beta-lactamase producers. It is in the beta-lactamase inhibitor class of medications.
