Textiles – on the right track
With the government planning to set up 25 integrated textile parks I think this will go a long way to enhance the competitiveness of the textile industry which has a great future after the doing away of the quota regime.
The industry is a $ 85 billion sector and several highly placed officials in the Textiles Ministry tell me that the domestic market has enough potential to touch $ 45 billion while exports can touch $ 40 billion dollars in a year’s span.
However the government has a lot more to do if they are to make things easier for the Exim community. Creating an amiable environment by reduction cost of production, rationalization of excise duty structure and removing infrastructure bottlenecks I feel top the list. I also feel that the labour laws too need to be amended to help all associated with the industry.
Manufacturers too need to adopt best practices and encourage research and development to attain global dominance. Exporters’ suggestions to enhance the quality of the products too need to be looked into.
Many in the industry say that major buyers have increased their sourcing from the country and are confident of the prospects of Indian textile industry. This indeed is good news, I would say.
