Time to re-assess

With the empowered group of ministers (EGoM) coming to no conclusion on the issue of land acquisition for special economic zones (SEZs), I think it is the best time for retrospect and to ponder on how to carry forward from here on.

However, the EGoM’s decision to go ahead with the 63 SEZs notified so far was a fair move. Several corporates have already put in their resources and shelving these projects will be a big injustice.

I believe what we need now is better coordination between the state governments and the Centre. I have always stressed on one vital point that SEZs should not be approved at the cost of agricultural land. These zones should be located on non-farm land and wasteland.

The Central government needs to approach the issue carefully. In many cases, I have seen that locations of SEZs do not involve fresh acquisition of land. These SEZs, which are located on land already in the possession of state industrial development corporations, should get the green signal without much hassle. I sincerely hope these locations too are not put in the cold storage.

Lastly I feel that the respective states should take care to ensure that fertile and irrigated farmland is not used for the purpose of SEZs. Let’s hope good sense prevails when the EGoM meets again next week
