There may be some good news coming the way of both the Export Oriented Units (EOUs) and Special Economic Zone (SEZ) units with the central government appealing to the state governments to exempt from indirect taxes levied on them.

However, talks on this issue are not new. This exemption of state levies has been under consideration of the Commerce Ministry for quite sometime now.

Although I feel the ministry must now take up this issue with the state governments at the highest level.

I even hear the ministry has already moved the matter relating to removal of the Sunset Clause of 2009 under Section 10B of the Income Tax Act with the Finance Ministry too.

But if the ministry really wants these units to flourish, they also need to think of exemption from Central Sales Tax for cent percent EOUs.

We all know EOUs and SEZ units contribute a lot to the total exports figure of the country and has also succeeded in generating employment for ten of thousands of people. It’s high time the government too plays their part to help the units to do even better.
