The los angeles abrasion testing machine is a device which is used to perform the los angeles abrasion test that measures the degradation of mineral aggregates resulting from a combination of different actions such as abrasion, impact and grinding. Simply put, this test is used to indicate toughness and abrasion characteristics of the constituent coarse aggregates of hot mix asphalt used in the construction of highway pavements.
These abrasion testing machines are widely used in the road construction industry. The test is essential due to the simple reason that is a road pavements should be long lasting and have optimal toughness to allow heavy duty usea . The only way for ensuring this is the use of optimal quality constituents in the pavement construction. The los angeles abrasion testing machines ensures that this requirement is taken care of.
Components :
Hollow steel cylinder closed at both ends, with an internal diameter of 700 mm and length of 500 mm.
A removable steel shaft
Abrasive charge made of cast iron or steel balls, the machine generally has 6 to 12 such balls.
Sieves
Balance of capacity generally weighing 5 and 10 kg.
Drying oven
Procedure for Testing Mineral Aggregate Sample Using Los Angeles Abrasion Testing Machine
The test sample should generally constitute of mineral aggregates that have been dried in the oven between 105-115 degrees celsius.
Select the aggregate grading to be tested after ensuring that it conforms to the aggregate to be used in construction.
Choose the abrasive charge as per the weight of the aggregate being tested.
Place the mineral aggregates and the abrasive charge on the cylinder and fix the cover.
Rotate the los angeles abrasion test machine at speeds of 30-33 revolutions per minute. Make sure that the machine is balanced with a uniform peripheral speed.
Stop the machine after the desired number of revolutions.
