Purpose in a Nutshell
A Horizontal Laminar air flow is an airtight bench-top cabinet used to contain and protect biological samples, pharmaceutical elements and other sensitive items from airborne micro-contaminates. The air flows in a uniform direction i.e., horizontal (in this case) and in a constant speed, providing the cleanest cabinet for science. 

Highly Efficient Filter 
It incorporates 99.99% efficient HEPA filter to remove very small airborne particulates of size 0.3Aum; or it may use 99.999% ULPA to remove contaminants of size 0.12Aum and bigger.

Working Principle of Horizontal Laminar Air Flow
A fan module and filter work together simultaneously. The fan module within the cabinet pushes the air through HEPA filter to flow in the horizontal direction with a constant speed onto the work surface towards the sample. The air is pulled from the back of the cabinet that when crossed through the sample takes away the contaminants with it.

Sterilization of Horizontal Laminar Air Flow 
One or more germicidal lamps are used to sterilize the interior of the horizontal LAF cabinet before and after the applications. 

Material of Construction
The LAF cabinet is usually made from stainless steel as the material is highly resistant to corrosion, high temperature and pressure, chemicals and other impacts.

How does a horizontal laminar air flow operates?-
From back of the unit, a fan pushes HEPA-filtered air horizontally over the work surface, creating a sterile environment for keeping samples safe from 0.3 µm-sized particulates. It is an enclosed cabinet which moves filtered air at a constant speed to remove contaminants from samples. 
What is the difference between vertical and horizontal laminar air flow?+
The difference lies in the airflow direction. In horizontal laminar air flow, the air moves from back of the unit to the front while in vertical laminar air flow the air moves downward from top of the unit. They are the two main types of the laminar air flow cabinet. 
What is the difference between a horizontal laminar air flow and bio-safety cabinet?+
A bio-safety cabinet throws out HEPA-filtered air while a horizontal laminar air flow unit releases unfiltered exhaust air that tend to be unsafe for workers and environment outside the tabletop cabinet.
