Chemical lace is a decorative fabric strip that has net and open web patterns on it and is used as an embellishment to enhance the look of attires. Chemical laces are a form of machine made lace and are also referred to as Schiffli laces. Usually made from cotton yarn, these laces can also be designed using linen, silk, polyester etc.
Designing :
Steps used for designing chemical lace are given below :
A sacrificial fabric is chosen and is chemically treated.
A specific pattern is embroidered on the fabric using a multi-needle schiffle machine. The patterns are made in a manner so that these become a stand alone piece of lace later.
Afterwards, the complete fabric is then submerged in a solution that dissolves the sacrificial fabric leaving out only the embroidered patterns, which becomes a lace.
Uses of chemical lace:
These are used to add charm and elegance to handkerchiefs, towels, table covers etc
White chemical lace applique is used to decorate collars of gowns, frocks and many more apparels
Beautiful fingerless hand gloves to go with wedding gowns can be stitched from chemical laces
These are also used to design scarves by stitching it on its border to add a touch of refinement
Chemical laces come with various motif designs like floral, leaves and other geometrical patterns etc. that makes these suitable for improving the look of curtains and rugs
