What Are Cement Bricks Called?

Blocks constructed of concrete are often produced in big sizes so that blockwork may be completed more quickly and with less cement used in the joints than brickwork can. Blocks are considered to be hollow if the proportion of voids is more than 25 percent, whereas perforated blocks are the only kind of block that has voids that are less than 25 percent. Each of these blocks sees widespread use in the construction of non-loadbearing walls and compound walls. It is possible to reduce the amount of dead weight that masonry contributes to a structure by using hollow blocks, which are manufactured specifically for load-bearing walls. Blocks may also be made with concrete and sand, which are referred to as cement-sand blocks, or with cement and soil, which are referred to as soil-cement blocks. These types of blocks have a low breaking strength and are used in building projects that have a limited budget.

What Are Cement Bricks Used For?

The BIS suggests that the fineness modulus of the mixed aggregate should be between 3.6 and 4, and the size range of the coarse aggregates that should be utilized is between 6 and 12 mm. In most cases, lean mixtures of up to 1:8 are used. When making concrete blocks, the ratio of cement to combined aggregate in the concrete mix should not be more than one part cement to six parts combined aggregate volume. Concrete blocks may be produced by hand or by machine, depending on your preference. After that, at least 14 days are spent curing the cast block in either a water tank or a yard.

The curing process is followed by a drying process that lasts for four weeks before the blocks may be utilized in masonry buildings. Either they should be stacked in a way that allows for voids to be created in the horizontal direction in order to make drying them easier, or they should be steam dried and cured. The whole procedure makes it possible for the blocks to completely contract while they are being set on the wall, which is an essential step in the construction of robust walls. It is possible to observe the applications of cement bricks by looking at how cement bricks are classified:

Hollow Bricks: The following are the three grades that are applicable to closed and open cavity-type hollow concrete blocks:
  • Grade C blocks have a density of greater than 1000 kg/m3 and are used in the construction of walls that do not carry any weight.
  • Grade B bricks are used for load-bearing walls and have a density that is lower than 1500 kg/m3 on average.
  • Grade A bricks are the highest quality available. They have a minimum density of 1500 kg/m3 and are utilized for load-bearing walls.
To produce various aesthetic effects, these blocks may be purchased with a variety of ornamental facings, such as fluted facing.

Solid concrete blocks: It should take no more than 28 days to construct them for a specified concrete strength of between 4.0 and 5.0 N/mm2. These blocks have a density of not less than 1800 kilograms per cubic meter and are used as load-bearing walls.

Paver blocks: These blocks are formed of solid concrete and come in a variety of forms. They were designed specifically for use as paving material on outdoor grounds, such as industrial floors, gas stations, driveways, parking lots, and sidewalks, among other places.

AAC Blocks: Blocks made of autoclaved aerated concrete are referred to as AAC blocks. These blocks are often referred to as lightweight blocks or hollow blocks. They are formed into solid blocks using materials, water, and cement such as powdered sand and pulverized fly ash together with chemicals that aerate the air bubbles and stabilize them. The end product is a combination of thick liquid that is put into steel molds to make enormous cakes. The cakes are then cut into individual pieces. After a period of time, the mixture will begin to solidify, at which point it will be prepared to be cut using taut steel wires into a large number of individual blocks of the desired size. AAC blocks may be used to create very lightweight partitions as well as blocks with a moderate weight that are suitable for building light load-bearing walls. Since the material used to make these blocks is acquired by autoclaving, drying does not cause them to experience any shrinkage. The cement that is produced by autoclaving has a crystalline structure, which distinguishes it from the cement that is produced by conventional wet curing or conventional steam curing.

What Is the Advantage of Cement Bricks?

The advantages of using cement bricks are:

Option with a lower cost: Block masonry is much more cost-effective than brick masonry in most cases. It is common knowledge that they may be purchased for Rupees. 1,500 less per cubic meter than brick masonry can. This divergence is not one of little importance. It is estimated that the cost of building a wall using AAC blocks is 17.65 percentage points lower than the cost of building a wall with traditional bricks.
Alternative that is less harmful to the environment: In no way do their manufacturing or production processes have an adverse impact on the natural world or contribute to its depletion. Fly Ash, a by-product of thermal power plants, is the material that is used to make these things. On the other hand, the processing and production of red bricks require the use of topsoil, which deprives the natural world of a precious and important protective layer of soil. The National Green Tribunal's stance against red bricks may largely be explained by this principled argument.
High levels of soundproofing: Those who live near noisy highways or in industrial neighbourhoods may find that soundproofing their homes is a godsend. Block buildings, as opposed to brick constructions, have a higher density and, as a result, superior soundproofing. Their high acoustic insulation is a tremendous aid if the noise that is continually present in the environment around your house stops you from getting a restful night's sleep.
Lighter weight: Concrete blocks are lighter than red bricks, which allows for higher workability, stability, and longevity. Concrete blocks are also more fire-resistant than red bricks. Because their wet density ratio is lower than their dry density ratio, the dead load on buildings is reduced, which makes them more useful and an excellent choice for contemporary constructions.
Better strength: Concrete blocks are often regarded as having superior resistance to natural disasters such as earthquakes, tornadoes, and hurricanes, all of which are seeing an uptick in frequency in recent years. Countries that make it easier to utilize blocks and actively encourage their citizens to do so place high importance on their ability to withstand the effects of natural catastrophes. The method in which they are constructed contributes to the longevity and strength of the products.
Space-saving: The fact that concrete blocks take up much less space than other building materials makes them a popular choice among constructors and builders. The breadth is narrowed, but the dependability is not sacrificed in the process, which results in an increase in the amount of space required for the building of walls. Brick walls, as they have been known historically, are becoming less common, especially in larger cities where there is intense competition for available living space.

Are Cement Bricks Strong?

They are often stronger compared to other bricks when subjected to compressive stresses; however, this mostly relies on the quality of their manufacturing as well as the particular elements that they contain. Cement bricks often get their strength from the crushed stone that is used in their production, which also lends them their durability. Because of their strength, they have an edge in certain scenarios they face. Concrete often continues to harden long after it has been manufactured, which results in cement bricks that are even more durable. Concrete has an exceptionally strong resistance to wear and tear.

FAQs Related to Cement Brick

Red bricks are preferred over cement concrete blocks in terms of tensile strength. Bricks have a higher density than concrete blocks, but since they are fragile, they have a far lower tensile strength. As opposed to this, concrete blocks have greater tensile strength.
The finest bricks are those of first-rate quality. They are suitable for long-lasting structures because of their smooth surface and well-defined edges.
Compared to bricks, concrete blocks are substantially more water resistant and have greater compressive strength. Despite having a shorter lifespan than brick, concrete may nonetheless provide effective effects for up to a century.
Block masonry is substantially less costly than brick masonry. According to reports, they are Rs. 1,500 less expensive per cubic metre than brick masonry.
