The primary tool that is used by pen manufacturers is a plastic injection molding machine. Because it may be used to make the vast majority of the plastic components of a ballpoint pen, including the pen's barrel, clip, tip, thrust device, thrust tube, end plug, cap, adapter, etc.

Automatic ballpoint pens are ubiquitous in the classroom and workplace. The ballpoint pen is easy and functional; all you have to do is push the refill to extend and lock it and press it again to retract it into the pen holder.

Ball Pen Making Machine: Working Principle

The hopper can either be manually stocked with raw plastic ball pen material or equipped with feeding systems. The combination of base plastic granules, colored granules, and additive granules constitutes the raw material as a whole. Because of gravity, this stuff eventually makes its way into the barrel. A heater wraps itself around the outside of the barrel or cylinder throughout its whole length. 

This heater is put to work in order to liquefy the ball pen raw material. A screw located within the barrel is responsible for transporting these molts. It applies a great deal of force in the direction of the mold in order to force the molten material into it. This is situated at the very tip of the barrel.

This mold will typically consist of two sections. One part of it is fastened on the stationary plate that is located at the end of the barrel. And another one that is mounted on the plate that is moving. The pressure on the molds is applied by a device that is either hydraulic or pneumatic.

Manufacturing Process
 

Here is the manufacturing Process:

1. Making the Ink 

Ink is produced in large quantities in a special room of the factory. Compounders are the employees who manufacture batches of ink by following a set of instructions for a certain formula. The batch tank is where the raw components go to be thoroughly blended. 

These batches can be heated or chilled as needed, depending on the recipe, to facilitate the blending of the ingredients. Some of the bulkier ingredients are injected and measured straight into the batch tank. A single click of a mouse on some digital controls adds these components. 

The rates of heating and cooling can also be adjusted with these knobs and switches. There are several quality control checks that occur at various stages of the ink mixing process.

2. Stamping and Forming 

The metal parts of the pen can be fabricated concurrently with the ink production. Tungsten carbide balls are commonly obtained from third-party suppliers. Various molds are used to create the pen's point and body. 

At the outset, stamping machines receive bands of brass and immediately begin cutting thousands of tiny discs. The discs of brass are then melted and placed into a compression chamber equipped with a steel ram and a spring-backed ejector plunger. 

Metal is pressed by a steel ram, which then retracts the plunger and pushes the metal into a die-cast mold. As the metal is squeezed, the components of the pen take shape.

3. Molding the Housing 

The plastic pen parts are made at the same time as the Ballpoint pen parts. Extrusion or injection molding are also viable options for making them. In either method, the plastic is first delivered as granules or powder, which is then poured into a large hopper. 

A huge spiral screw is used in the extrusion process to push the material through a heated chamber in a continuous stream.

4. Ink Filling and Assembly 

Assembling the parts is the next step after their formation. In most cases, the ink cartridge comes first, followed by the ballpoint. Next, the parts are sent to injectors, which use the color code to fill the ink reservoir. The reservoir's spring, if present, is mounted to the barrel.

5. Finally Assemble, Pack and Shipping 

Then, the pen's tip and reservoir are tucked away inside the barrel. 

Additional parts like the top and bottom are added now. Extra touches like coatings, embellishments and final cleaning are applied as well. Once the production of the pens is complete, they are packaged for distribution.
