Aromatic Oils are volatile and liquid fragrance molecules extracted from natural sources, most commonly plants. The odoriferous chemicals (aromatic oils) are produced in the chloroplast of the leaf, the vesinogenou layer of the cell wall, or by the hydrolysis of certain glycosides. They can be found in many areas of the plant. Some may be found in the leaves, seed, flower, peel, berries, rhizome, root, bark, wood, resin, and petals.
Aromatic oils extracted from various parts of the same plant can have quite diverse fragrances and characteristics. Many interconnected elements influence the amount of aromatic oil recovered from the plant, including meteorological, seasonal, and geographical circumstances, harvest timing, and extraction procedures. The phases of plant growth can also influence the output of oils from plants. Aromatic oils include oxygenated molecules that act as chemical messengers to the cells, bringing life to the plants by eliminating pests, promoting growth, and boosting healing.
Extraction of Aromatic Oils:
Some common techniques used for the extraction of aromatic oils are;
- Hydro-distillation: Distillation of water in direct contact with fresh or occasionally dried macerated plant materials is used in this process. The plant material is ground and weighed before being transported to the Clevenger setup. Direct steam is used to heat plant material in two to three times the weight of water. The distillation vessel is heated over a heating mantle, and the water vapour and oil are extracted using a water cool condenser.
- Hydro-diffusion: Hydrodiffusion is an aromatic oil extraction process in which steam at atmospheric pressure is pushed through the plant material from the top of the extraction chamber, resulting in oils that keep the natural scent of the plants.
- Enfleurage: Flower petals are laid on trays of odourless vegetable or animal fat, which absorbs the fragrance oil of the flowers. After the vegetable or fat has absorbed as much essential oil as possible, the depleted petals are removed and replaced with fresh ones every day or every few hours. This process is repeated until the fat or oil is saturated with aromatic oil. This is known as an Enfleurage blend. The addition of alcohol aids in the separation of aromatic oil from fatty components. Because the alcohol evaporates, leaving just the essential oil left, the enfleurage process is the optimal approach when the source of the oil is to be extracted from flowers or petals.
- Steam distillation: The selected plant (fresh or dried) is initially placed in the jar in this technique. Steam is then introduced and circulated through the plant, which includes the aromatic molecules or oils of the plant. Once released, the aromatic molecules pass through a closed system to the cooling equipment. Vapors are cooled by using cold water. They condense and become a liquid when they cool.
- Solvent extraction: This step includes extracting the oils from the oil-bearing materials with the use of a solvent. For example, leaves, roots, and fruits are extracted with benzene in the cold or at boiling temperatures, with or without a combination of acetone or petroleum ether, whereas flowers are extracted with ethers.
