Pollution Control Plant:
During Secondary smelting, large volumes of gases are produced, carrying
Substantial quantities of dust. On leaving the smelter, the gases are cooled from about 900 A C to about 100 A C using air and/or water cooling, and pass into a baghouse where the dust is collected and eventually fed back to the Rotary Furnace. The gases subsequently are released into the atmosphere. In the course of processing one ton of lead, as much as 100 ton of air has to be cleaned in this way.
Regarding air pollution, during smelting there will be gases, dust and soot coming from the rotary furnace and refining kettle. This is all sucked into the air pollution control system. The first stage has a dust collector, where the larger solid particles are removed. From the dust collector the gases are sent to a cooling tower to reduce the temperature of the mixture, and separating large particles. This is then led to a cyclone, which separates fine solid particles. The gas is then sent to the bag house, which then passes the gases through bag filters, which removes any solid particles as small as 10 microns. All solid particles removed so far are sent to charging unit of rotary furnace.

The Last step is a wet scrubber, where a water jet separates about 80% of the remaining solid particles, and at the same time absorbs certain gases, particularly SO2 from the gas mixture. The purified air is then sent into the atmosphere through chimney.
