A light source enables the object under examination to be illuminated so that it can be clearly seen by the operator. Fiber scopes and rigid bore scopes are generally of small diameter so internal space for illumination fibers is limited. Selecting the appropriate light source to meet the needs of the inspection is therefore as important as selecting the correct instrument.

For examination of large cavities and viewing over longer distances, or where CCTV or photographic equipment is in use, a high intensity light source is recommended, such as the Olympus ILH-2, which uses a powerful 50W Metal Halide arc lamp.
