Electro kinetic lithotripsy is based on a rigid rod, accelerated by electromagnetic energy. The advantage of the EKL against other ballistic techniques is that the movement of the tip is adjusted to the most appropriate time energy function. EKL is highly effective for all kinds of stones, regardless of their composition and localization. Out of five probe sizes, ranging from 0.8 to 3.5 mm, the ideal size for the treatment can be chosen. Electro hydraulic probes generate shock waves with a sharply rising amplitude. This builds up a well defined effective area to destruct the stone without damaging the surrounding tissue. The energy of the shock waves in the effective area is high enough to allow a fast and thorough disintegration of the stone in seconds. The Walz EL27 line incorporates more than 25 years of experience in lithotripsy technique. It started in 1974 when an EHL lithotriptor was designed. The first commercially available lithotriptor was the EL21, featuring EHL probes with monitored working life. In 1987 we added an automatic probe recognition system. 1994 Walz presented the unique EKL technique, combined with EHL function in the EL25.
