An isolation transformer is a transformer, which is used to disconnect two circuits. They are sometimes provided with symmetrical windings. An isolation transformer does not raise or lower a voltage; that is, whatever voltage comes in is equal to what goes out. These transformers prevent current from flowing directly from one side to the other.

As a result they serve as a safety device to prevent electrocution. They also act as a safety device in electronics testing. Isolation transformers with electrostatic shields are used for power supplies for sensitive equipment such as computers or laboratory instruments.
