We offer Novel Material for Conformable Splints.

Splints are used in millions of cases every year in the US alone. A considerable percentage of these are custom splints formed by a therapist for the individual patient.

It is well established that the outcome of using a splint is directly related to how well the splint fits. A fit that does not conform well could be too loose, allowing too much movement, or too tight, resulting in less wearer compliance.

The materials available for creating custom splints however, are flat sheets that are not easily made to conform over complex body parts such as those of the hand and wrist. We propose to create a new type of material made of a braided composite. The braid can be softened using warm water, slipped over the body part and shaped by gentle smoothing.

The new material will be easier to form to the patient, and once it cools forms a splint that has the same mechanical properties as modern splints while remaining lighter and thinner than available materials. Our proposed material will therefore make it easier for therapists to create better splints.
