The common name in India, Isabgol, is derived from Persian words ISAP and GOL meaning horse ears as it describes the shape of the seed. It is an annual plant and flowers 60 days after planting.

The seeds are exposed as capsules open during maturity.

Manufacturing Process:

The Psyllium Seed is First Removed of Impurities through Sieves, Magnets, Destoners and Aspirators. These are dehusked through grinders, winnowers and aspirators. If needed, the refined husk is pulverized into powder.

Properties: It mainly consists of mucilage. It is white-cream coloured and has a slight acid taste. Being hydrophilic, it swells after it absorbs water and forms a mucilage.

Applications: Pharmaceutical: It helps lower cholesterol, in fighting diabetes, is used as a purgative and provides source of fibre supplement.

Grades: Psyllium is offered in 85%, 95% and 98% purities.
