20. Commercial, Economic and Political Report of Bahrain.

COMMERCIAL (MARCH 2012):

Bahrain is poised to become a regional hub for green technologies that would serve Middle East and North Africa in supporting sustainable growth and development. Bahrain was preferred to host the headquarters because of its hospitality and adoption of several environmental initiatives as well as its position as a regional commercial hub. Export is the key word for a country like Bahrain which has the small and medium enterprises (SMEs) as its lifeline. The government’s major initiatives to promote the SME sector in the country can be further boosted by strengthening exchange-learning relations with a strong SME based country like Holland. Bahrain has further enhanced its connectivity to the rest of the world by linking it to an international cable system. The Tata Communications TGN-Gulf Cable system connecting India, Oman, UAE, Qatar, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia will further consolidate Bahrain’s position as an international financial centre. For Tata Communications, this is a part of a $420 million investment made in the Middle East region on cable system and related projects over the past three years. Bahrain’s energy sector will attract about $20 billion investment over the next 15 years.

ECONOMIC (MARCH 2012):

Bahrain’s economy is expected to be bouncing back despite of the repercussions of the February-March unrest. Bahrain’s economy is expected to recover quicker, growing at 3.5 percent this year supported by economic policies that focus on regaining trust, diversifying sources of income, and stimulating foreign investments. Bahrain’s Real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) at constant prices grew by 3.2 percent for the fourth quarter of 2011. The recovery in Bahrain’s economy is expected primarily due to a robust hydrocarbon sector underpinned by high oil prices. The petroleum and natural gas sector rose by 7.6 percent year-on-year during the quarter as compared with 3.5 percent year-on-year in 3Q11. The manufacturing sector which contributes 16 percent of GDP grew robustly by 2.1 percent year-on-year in 4Q11 from 2.8 percent year-on-year in 3Q11 buoyed by the aluminium industry. Aluminium production was not disrupted during the unrest and the metal remains one of the main exports items for Bahrain. Bahrain’s non-oil economic sectors recorded a growth of 2.6 percent in the fourth quarter. The government services, telecommunications, social services, retail banks, electricity and water also recorded solid growth. Other sectors grew slowly due to the low domestic and global demand. These include real estate, external banking units, hotels and other tourism-related activities.

POLITICAL (MARCH 2012):

The one-year anniversary of the Kingdom’s ‘day of rage’ passes off on 14 February 2012 with skirmishes across the country, though a better-prepared security force was able to stave off the type of protests and clashes which had led to the declaration of marital law and the entry of military forces from the Gulf Co-operation Council Peninsula Shield last March. Bahrain political crisis remained unresolved and there is uncertainty booming large over the direction of Bahrain’s Political reform process which began in 2002. Parliamentary elections were held on 24th September 2011 to fill 18 seats vacated by Al Wefaq, the country’s largest opposition party, which had pulled out of the nation’s legislature. The Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry was established on 29th June 2011 in the Kingdom of Bahrain. The Commission was tasked with investigating and reporting on the events that took place in Bahrain from February and March 2011.The Commission submitted its report on 23rd November 2011.
