Start small, think big

Several users have from time to time, been asking me how to start an e-business. I would like to say that starting an e-business is very easy, only if you get your basics right.

First and foremost, starting a business involves a lot of research. I have seen several businesses going down the drain when started without research. I would recommend that you write a detail business plan first.

Secondly, get clients and customers lined-in beforehand. I would like to caution you not to wait until you have officially started your business. Here, take advantage of the B2B portals. Register yourself in one and build a detailed website. It is worth investing in. These sites already have an exhaustive database of traders. Registering yourself means an easy access to this list. You are also entitled to several value-added services that will take care of most of your business activities. In e-business, visibility is very crucial. To get that extra mileage, give all information on your products with photographs, wherever possible, on the website.

Another important thing is to get professional help. Just because you are starting a small business, it doesn't mean you have to be an expert on everything. I would advice not to waste time and money trying to do things yourself that you're not qualified to do.

Before starting an e-business, check your financial status. Don't expect to get orders from Day one. Patience is the key to a successful business. In case you are low on cash, approach potential investors and lenders. There are several government schemes too. See if any suits your requirements.

Be professional from the beginning. Let people know that you are a professional running a serious business. Get yourself a business phone, fax and a business email id. This will add to your credibility. Also get the legal and tax issues right the first time. It's much more difficult and expensive to undo a mess afterwards.

A small e-business doesn't mean small on profits. Get your basics right and take on from there. Do an extensive study first and expand your wings.
