Switched-Mode
Power Supply (SMPS) is an electrical circuit used in various electronic devices
and machines. SMPS has wide applications depending upon the usage. SMPS is used
primarily on devices that need a stable supply of power, also where any device
is turned on and off at high frequencies. Like another switch, it converts the
DC or AC power supply (from source) to DC in electronic devices such as
computers with balanced electric current and frequencies. Unlike a linear power
supply, the pass transistor of a switching-mode supply continually switches
between low-dissipation. An ideal Switched-mode power supply doesn't dissipate
any energy.
Types
of SMPS
DC-DC
Converter a The power received from AC mains is rectified and
filtered as a high-voltage DC. This high DC voltage is then switched and fed to
the step-down transformer at the primary side. The fixed and filtered output is
collected at the secondary side of the step-down transformer, which is
ultimately sent as the output to the power supply.
Forward
Converter a The choke carries the current in the forward converter
regardless of whether the transistor is conducting. The diode inside the
transistor has the current during the OFF period to support the energy flow
through the load. During the On period, the choke stores the energy and passes
a part of the energy to the output load.
Two other types of
SMPS available in the market are Flyback converters & Self Oscillating
Flyback Converter.
