The manufacture of honing stones is a very specialized process, in which skills and experience play a large part. The correct balance of five elements - abrasive (diamond or boron nitride), grit size, crystal, bonding agent and concentration - is crucial. Different compositions are required for honing different materials like hardened steel, hard chrome, cast iron, soft steel etc.

Diamond and CBN honing stones till today are the most economical and ecological alternative for mostly automobile manufacturers. The extreme hardness of Diamond and CBN guarantees long lifetime cycles for the honing stones which is a basic requirement for any automation and multi shift manufacturing. Due to the extreme hardness of diamond, a high consistency in geometry can be achieved aver a very long period. The honing of very small bores can only be done by using Diamond or CBN.
