Opportunity
for Processed Food Including Meat in India |
|
India is the world's
second largest producers of food next to China,
but accounts only for 1.6% of international
trade. The Govt. of India trying to increase
these share to 3% in next eight years and
hence food processing has vast potential for
investors and exporters. |
|
Lean buffalo meat, mutton
and poultry meat demand is increasing in domestic
as well as international markets. The export
of animal products during the years 2005-2006
was Rs. 3556.9 crores out of which buffalo
meat was Rs. 2629.57, processed meat 2.43,
sheep and goat meat 8.37, poultry products
552.28 crores. |
|
The existing levels of processing
of meat, poultry and fish are low with majority
of the processed production are meant for
exports. The country has 3,600 slaughter houses,
of 9 modern abattoirs and 171 meat processing
in units under meat products order. |
|
The survey for the quarter
ended June 2007 reveals, the total outstanding
investment in poultry and meat segment stood
at Euro 177 million spanning across 12 projects. |
|
There are few number of integrated
poultry processing plants in organized sector
as well as egg processing units for export.
About 40 million people are engaged in the
meat sector. |
|
The integrated approach starts
from suitable infrastructures, production,
processing, preservation & quality control. |
|
Development of cold chain
and organized food retail including fast food
chain have contributed to rapid growth of
wholesome ready-to-cook, heat-and-eat, meat,
fish and poultry products. |
|
Integrated meat and poultry
dressing plants have contributed immensely
to the growth of domestic as well as export
markets to earn valuable foreign exchange. |
 |
The domestic processing and
marketing is still in early state of development
and hence there is huge potential and scope
in the sectors to be tapped. |
 |
The emerging open market due
to inflow of technology in processing, preservation,
quality control and attractive functional
packaging of food products has thrown a challenge
to domestic market. |
 |
The domestic market of India
have accepted the challenge and are competing
well due to upgradation technology and marketing
skill for fresh and frozen foods. Research
and educational training support to meat and
poultry industry is essential. |
