Indian Dairy on the move.............

World's largest milk producing nation (around 99 million tons per annum in 2006-2007), which is about 15% of the total milk production in the world, with an annual growth rate of 4%.
Milk is India’s number one farm commodity, valued at Rs. 107,544 crores (based on producer price), leaving behind paddy, wheat and horticultural products.
Value of output of dairy industry : Rs. 191,000 crores. The share of dairy sector in the total agricultural output is nearly 16%.
In-milk bovine population in the year 2003 was 8.2 million corss bred cows, 27.6 million indigenous cows and 33 million buffaloes.
Milk production from cows is 41%, from buffaloes 55% and from goats 4%.
Cattle feed production from organized sector is 3 million tons and an equal quantity is produced under unorganized sector, while the requirement is 50 million tons for all livestock categories.
Market for veterinary products & feed additives is Rs. 12,000 crores.
Dairy plants handle 45 million litres per day.
The number of dairy plants in the country is 748 with an installed capacity of 81.3 million litres per day.
With millions of landless, small and medium farmers engaged in dairying activity in India, dairy development is reckoned as an instrument of social and economical change.
As the new trend of paying remunerative price to milk producer is catching up, the producer will be in a better position to invest in dairying for a higher profitability.
The export of milk products is on the rise and is likely to touch 68,000 MT during 2006-07.
Dairying in India is attracting more entrepreneurs and has a great potential to grow in fast lane.
