Forging Ahead With Blue Revolution |

India
is the third largest producer of fish in the
world and second largest producer of Inland
fish. |
|
The fish production
in India has shown excellent growth during
the past half century with approximately 6.4
million tones in the year 2005-2006 from a
meagre 0.60 million tones in 1950. |
|
The fisheries sector
provides employment to seven million fishermen
and fish farmers. The fisheries sector contributes
nearly Rs. 220 billion, 1.4% of the national
gross domestic product (GDP) and 4.6% to agricultural
GDP. |
|
Fisheries sector
is one of the major contributors to foreign
exchange earnings of the Country (Rs. 64 billion). |
|
India has vast inland
and marine bioresources. The major Inland
aquatic resources include 1.2 million hectares
of brackish water area, 2.38 million ha of
freshwater ponds and tanks, 3.15 million ha
of reservoirs besides about 0.19 million kilometers
of rivers and canals. |
|
In India, large and
medium dams have created almost 250 million
cubic meters of water storage intercepting
30% of the available surface flow. |
|
The long coastline
of 8129 km with the exclusive economic zone
(EEZ) encompasses 2.02 km2 of coastal and
offshore areas in eastern, western and southern
parts of India. |
|
These aquatic resources
are huge source of biological wealth and provde
nutritional security to the people. |
