TOPIC : How important is consultancy in India?

How important is ''consultancy'' to Indian businesses or Western businesses wishing to enter the Indian market?

My business, Occental Limited, is a Western Europe-based consultancy business and we are actively addressing the Indian sub-continent. Specialising in sales & marketing and product sourcing & logistics, we help Indian companies reach the Western Europe market and Western companies source and ship products from India.

Re: How important is consultancy in India?

Dear Mr. Milligan,
You have raised a very important and pertinent question. I appreciate that.
Not only do I wish to answer your question but also invite you to react to it.
The consultancy business has several aspects. While financial consulting is in abundance, it is largely restricted to financial accounting. However the situation is in a state of flux and one can anticipate that this will change in coming years. In marketing, the consultancy business also has several dimensions. Ranging from simple marketing mix strategy to complex multi-dimensional strategies, the Indian Corporate sector is getting acquainted with the need to have an external mechanism that will create future successes. All of this is mainly related to large businesses. Also the central and state governments and public sector units (PSUs) are major customers in several cases. The consultants too are large and global examples being accenture, McKinsey and so on.
Small and medium sized businesses usually do not have the intention/attitude leave alone the purchasing power to seek consulting. Hence, from a marketing point, SMEs are not target customers for consultants.
The third area of consulting is human resource development. Herein, I would include the software services sector where human capital is key to the business. The sector is big & getting bigger esp the BPOs. The growth potential is considerable and there is no dearth of supply. Tapping the opportunities is important for which credit is relatively easily available. Govt. policy is getting friendlier though business practices have to improve.
There are several issues which can be written and found on this subject.
Finally about myself. I am a business consultant for last 17 years, 12 of which were in Brussels, Belgium. I specialise in corporate and marketing strategy as well as in market and business intelligence activites. For any potential collaboration, pl. contact:
