TOPIC : Importing In India

I am an Indian, born and brought up in Thailand. I am fresh graduate and have join my family business. My question is regarding the importing in India and setting up a business in India.
We have acquire a tender to Supply St. Luke's Prickly Heat Powder (product of Thailand) for the whole India. After conducting a research only in Northern India market (yet to conduct in Maharashtra and Andra Pradesh) we couldn't find the right importer for our product. Whereas, the product has a huge potential of being a huge success in India.

My question is if I become an importer of my product in India, can anyone advice which location which suit us and on the other hand is it a nightmare for a NRI to do International Trade Business in India?

Is it a nightmare to set up a business in India?
I strongly believe that India is the market of massive competition, but the survivor also gets the good return according to its competencies.

Please feel free to give your opinion, it'll be of great help to our company.

Re: Importing In India

This is consumer goods related to cosmetics as well as hygiene. If your product is good it can be marketable on all India basis. Hire a professional agency to carry out nationwide advertising for appointing distributors, wholesalers, C & F agents. you can also tie-up with Malls and super markets. If your product receives goods response in all metro cities. It will definitely have good response from other cities and suburbans. however this is not always true. You may also take advice of market research groups.

Re: Importing In India

Dear Mr. Satish,
Thanks a lot for reply, actually I was having the same procedure in my mind, but approximate amount of this would cost, for conducting such a big campaign. I have personally conducted market research and found out there are very poor network in India distribution channel, only the local product and other multinational company have good highway to reach consumers. But our product we want to lanch by creating brand image gradually, we just dont want to throw our goods in the market. According to your advice procedures, but I only want to launch in one city which have suitable environment for doing business and creating opportunities for new brand. Can you please advice which city would be most suitable. Looking forward for your positive reply.

With Best Regards,
Prem Singh

Re: Importing In India

Try Chennai, Mumbai, Delhi and even Calcutta. So far as I know, these cities are hot with high humidity level. These cities, being metros have better paying capacity too. There could be some more cities having similar climatic conditions, in addition to the above, but their purchasing power may be a limiting factor for your products. Those cities can be tried in the second phase.

Besides selecting an effective and aggressive distribution channel, you may also be required to have a thorough study of the prevailing Indian brands which would be your strong competitors, their MRPS, profit margins to retailers, your product's landing cost in India (after paying duties and taxes), local distribution costs etc. in order to be an effective and competitive in Indian market.

Re: Re: Importing In India

In India demand for electric products is high at the moment, but now people are taking a backward steps towards electrical products from china, because of no service available to them to get it repair. So if you are planning to export to India make sure to advertise that you have a service centre in India it might be for a namesake. I can suggest you to export electrical toys, it has a demand in India.

Re: Re: Re: Importing In India

Dear Friends,

As Mr. Sumit said "In India demand for electric products is high at the moment, but now people are taking a backward steps towards electrical products from china, because of no service available to them to get it repair." That's true I think.

The market for electric products in India is very big. Tell the truth, I am exporting FM radios to Mumbai for several years. The quantity is very big before, but now, the market is slowing down. I am wondering to have new project for India market. It's very easy to find good products in China with competitive price. We can communicate on Internet if you all have any ideas about the business from China.
