TOPIC : North American Market

I have observed that the Chinese have covered the North American market successfully and the recent set back in their manufacturing quality control has not awakened the Indian manufacturers to fill the vacuum. I wonder what Indian exporters are waiting for.

Re: North American Market

Most of the manufacturers are not aware of market beyond the traditional countries.
Guide us how can we successfully do so and let us know how we can get the reliable database?

Re: North American Market

Dear Mr Joe Naareth
I had written a topic “Rejected Chinese Toys; Lead and magnets” Posted on August 21st in International Trade – Basics Forum

Also two topics by Bikky Khosla:
1. US rejection of Indian goods — what a shame; Posted on July 3rd in Product - Development, Manufacturing & Sourcing forum and
2. Opportunity for Indian companies; Posted on July 24th in Trade Policy Initiative forum

Good you are thinking on this subject. Leaded paint and scare of injury to the childern. Do you know in India of today we still use leaded pipes in all plumbing and use it for numberless other usages. India has no policy and plans, even today, to remove lead from the manufacturing processes. As far as I can see, India is far behind China for this business. Yes, India is miles ahead in IT and some other fields.

In India we don’t follow any Discipline on the manufacturing to define the product specs, and at times design and reliability specs even, in these products. The manufacturing processes are generally not set and written with change control.

I am in Denver and spend more than ½ my time in India. I have been staying abreast with the Chinese problem, which is a slip in Change Control, FMEA and MSDS requirements in their Design and manufacturing. This happened when Mettal had completely qualified them. In India, I can assure you most of our manufacturers of toys are not audit worthy for such production, and even in auto parts manufacturing don’t understand even complete concept of SPC, leave aside these terms.

Again, I feel happy that it was not India’s supply which got rejected. Though Mr. Khosla had brought up in one of his writing of failure of fruit supply chain from India. LEARN from this and Indian public can start uplifting and bring general awareness of the unhealthy affects of environment, hygiene and Items in use in India. Think of USA only after improving in INDIA and For INDIA.

Om Trehan

Re: Re: North American Market

I think there are some inherent reasons which prevented Indian Industrial culture to become mature and to handle international standards.

After Independence 60 years back, India's basic concern was to to keep all sections of the society engaged and for that India chose to follow the path of "Cottage Industry" and "Small Scale Industry" for which 500 to 600 items were kept reserved for them. Big industries were not allowed to enter into this segment.

All the big industry, so called, mother industries like iron steel, gas, coal, automobiles, etc. where stake of captial investments were too high were in the hands of either Govt. enterprises or big industrial houses. Whereas most of the consumer oriented goods were reserved for cottage and small industries. These Industries, with less capital in hand, could only produce items as per the domestic requirements.

With less capital in hand, there was no scope for any R&D (research and development)for either improving the goods quality or buying new and expensive manufacturing technologies. One exaample - Until 15 years back, Indian TV industry was a reserved item for small scale industry. No big industrial house was allowed to enter into this segment.

At that time, somewhere, it was quoted by an economist that the annual expenses on the R&D divsion of SONY Enterprises producing TVs was even more than the total sales turnover of the whole small scale industries all over India producing TVs. From this example, one can imagine that there was little scope or utilizing latest technology fo upgrading the product or the manufacturing techniiques.

Small scale and cottage industries still play an important role in Indian economy unlike China or any Western country. India still lacks financial resources unlike China, Japan or any Western countries which are capital rich countries. Besides all the shortcomings sited above by experts, I feel India still has its own identity and uniqueness and has a capacity to come up fast.

Re: North American Market

You know most of US experience importer don't contact with Chinese.

Many of the time this news is published. The reason behind market capture by Chinese exporter is to provide goods in very low price while Indian exporter provide good quality product.

The importer also import those goods which are availed from market in low price.

Many of the Chinese exporter provide good quality product but it is difficult to know about them.

Indian manufacturers are also capturing market but it takes long time to capture.
