About Socket weld Fittings

Reducers, tees, and elbows are just some of the pipe fittings that can be welded using a technique called socket welding (SW).

Pipes are permanently joined with socket weld pipe fittings by being put into a recessed area of the fitting, flange, or valve. After the pipe has been properly fitted into the fitting, fillet style sealing welds are used to permanently attach the two.

Socket weld pipe fittings cover a wide variety of connections, including SW couplings, SW elbows, and SW tees.

Pipes of varying diameters and angles can be joined using socket welds to provide new pathways for fluid flow.

In a piping network, socket welds are useful because of their versatility and good leakage integrity.

Types of Socket weld Fittings

1. Socket Weld Flange

The high-pressure smaller pipes typically employ the socket weld flange (SW flange). Flanges are designed with a recessed shoulder inside the bore, which allows pipes to be inserted into the shoulder and welded into place. Pipelines with a smooth bore and high transmission performance are made possible by the welding structure.

2. Sockolet

Like the weldolet and the threadolet, the sockolet (sock + olet) is a form of socket weld pipe fittings that is used to secure a smaller diameter pipe inside a larger diameter pipe. Socket is special in that it has a socket that is ideally suited for welding (the socket is inside the olet). It has a tight 90-degree bend and increased strength to withstand force. A counter hole spanning the outlet's outer diameter (OD) will help the pipe sit securely in the socket during installation and welding.

3. Socket Weld Tee

The 90-degree angle created by this fitting will allow the pipe to split out from its main line. The socket weld reduction tee has a branch that is smaller in diameter, and it joins the two shorter sections of pipe.

4. Socket Weld Elbow

Commonly employed in pipelines to redirect flow, socket weld elbows (SW elbows) come in 45-degree and 90-degree varieties, are made by forging methods, and are available in long-radius (LR) and short-radius (SR) variants.

5. Socket Weld union

Union is constructed from three parts that are joined together via a screwed junction. It has a central hub and two internal threads that, when rotated, will bring the two ends closer together. Therefore, before welding the ends together, the unions should be securely screwed. Seat warping will be reduced as a result of this.

6. Socket Weld Couplings

Here are the basic Socket weld Fittings couplings:

Full Coupling: Using this pipe, you can connect two pipes or a nipple.

Half Coupling: A branch connection could be made by welding this piece directly onto the run pipe.

Reducing Coupling: When joining pipes with dissimilar ODs, this aid is very useful.

Reducer insert: Those are made in accordance with MSS SP-79 specifications. It's useful for making possible fast and cheap pipeline reduction combinations. Therefore, regular socket weld connections might be used to fabricate these.

7. Socket Weld Cap

Socket weld caps are used to seal off the end of pipes, as their name implies.

8. Socket Weld Cross

For branches linked between two pipes traveling in the same direction, this connection allows for a 90-degree direction change.

9. Full Coupling

This coupling is used to bring together two pipes. Complete couplings allow for the joining of two pipes by use of threads on both ends.

10. Half Couplings

Half couplings are quite similar to full couplings, with the key distinction being that half couplings only have threads on one end. Typically, the half coupling's unthreaded end is welded or otherwise attached to the pipe it's connecting to.

Features of Socket weld Fittings

-In order to prepare the pipe for welding, it must first be beveled.

-In most cases, tack welds are unnecessary when ensuring good pipe alignment. These fittings can be aligned correctly because of how they are made.

-There is significantly less of a chance of leaking with socket weld pipe fittings, therefore they can be used in place of threaded fittings.

-The bore of a pipe might get contaminated by weld metal.

-SW fittings are easier to install and hence less expensive than butt weld fittings. This is because, unlike butt weld components, SW fittings don't require any specialized machining in order to function.

Difference Between Socket Weld Fittings and Threaded Fittings

Socket Weld Fittings:

Unlike threaded fittings, which are simply screwed onto the pipe, SW fittings are attached to pipes by fillet welds.

When making connections that need to last, SW fittings are the way to go. Although socket weld fittings are exceedingly reliable, they are time-consuming to install in a pipe system because of the numerous welding processes required for such small components.

From 1/8 to 4 inches in circumference, and from 2000 to 9000 pounds in tensile strength, socket weld fittings are among the most versatile types of pipe connections.

Socket weld fittings are typically employed in the following contexts:

-Steam

-Flammable fluids and gases

-Fluids that is acidic or otherwise dangerous

-Prolonged maintenance and set-up

The space between two devices that are beveled at 30 degrees can be filled using a butt welding connection, while a fillet welding connection is used for straighter connections.

The ASME B16.11 is the relevant standard for socket weld fittings. With this norm in place, a pipe can be placed inside the joint's indentation. Both the pipe and the junction can be simply trimmed to the desired dimensions. Ends don't need to be beveled or anything else. Welding and installing will go more smoothly if the surfaces are kept clean.

Threaded Fittings:

Threaded fittings are used in water distribution, fire protection, and cooling systems, in addition to low-pressure installations that are not vulnerable to vibration, elongation, or bending stresses. Threaded pipe fittings are not recommended for use with fluids whose temperatures are continually changing because sudden shifts in temperature could loosen or break the connection.

BSP and NPT are the two most common thread types, and they are incompatible with one another.

1. BSP Fittings

Pipes that adhere to the "British Standard" are known as "BSP," and there are two distinct variants: BSPT (tapered) and BSPP (parallel). The angle of the threads in this case is 55 degrees. BSP threaded fittings are less prevalent than NPT threaded fittings in the oil and gas industries.

2. NPT Fittings

The acronym NPT refers to the "National Pipe Taper" standard for threaded forged fittings that is commonly used in the oil and gas industry. NPT threading, as specified by ASME B1.20.1, has thread flank angles of 60 degrees (where BSP threading has thread flank angles of 55 degrees).

Superior flow characteristics are an intended design goal of Socket Weld pipe fittings. The quality is high since they are often made to the standards set out by the American Society for Mechanical Engineers and the American Society for Testing and Materials. Because of their high leakage integrity and structural strength, socket weld fittings are a great option for a wide variety of uses. When planning piping systems, it is essential to keep these things in mind.

Socket weld Fittings uses:

Here are the uses:

-At pipelines transporting hazardous, combustible, or expensive goods, socket weld pipe fittings such as elbows, tees, and reducers can be utilized since they eliminate the possibility of leaks.

-For use with ASME pipe and fittings in achieving desired dimensions.

-Used in areas where pipe installation is considered permanent

-Produced to ASTM A234 specifications, which may also meet the requirements of ASME B16.11. This specification defines the minimum dimensions, pressure and temperature ratings, marking, tolerances, and material requirements for carbon steel and forged carbon.
