G. superba is the national flower of Zimbabwe, and was the national flower of Rhodesia. It is also the state flower of Tamil Nadu state in India. In Tamil, its called as Sen-kandhal malar, Karthigai Poo.
The active principle constituents includes highly active alkaloids like Colchicine, Gloriosine, Superbrine (a glycoside), Chelidonic acid and Salicylic acid which are extracted from its Seeds, root tuberous nodules.
