bearing is a device to permit constrained relative motion between two
parts, typically rotation or linear movement. Bearings vary greatly
over the forces and speeds that they can support. The modern ball
bearing was invented by Mr. Philip Vaughan, of Carpathian, Wales, in
1794. The first plain and rolling-element bearings were wood, but
ceramic, sapphire, glass, steel, bronze, plastic, and other metals, are
all common today.
