Most artificial fertilizers are powerful "boosters", introducing large amounts of N-P-K (nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium). But N-P-K contents are not a yardstick for their effectiveness. Too much rain, for instance, can wash most of it out of the soil, while too little may lead to high concentrations and scorching of the delicate seedlings

Improvement in soil particle aggregation and water retention
Research has shown that 0.1 gram of sodium alginate added to 100 grams of soil increased its water holding capacity by 11%. The salts formed by alginic acid with the soil metals, swell when wet and retain moisture with strength, thus forming a crumb structure. Topsoil, the result of many years interaction between subsoil, fungi, plants, micro and macro organisms, is the natural growing medium for plants.
